Start your career in Materials Engineering.

With the development of science and technology and the ever-increasing demands of society, the field of Materials Engineering offers many opportunities for young people to establish and start their own businesses on their career path.

From his high school days, Nguyen Van Thanh, Director of Nha Viet Design Architecture and Interior Design Joint Stock Company, had a burning passion for interior design. However, he felt that his aesthetic sense and aptitude were not suited to this field. At that time, the student from Bac Giang saw that the construction materials sector was still very nascent in the market while it was already highly developed abroad. That was also the reason Thanh chose to study Construction Materials at the University of Construction.

In 2012, holding a degree in Construction Materials, Mr. Nguyen Van Thanh worked for various materials companies, earning 8-10 million VND per month – a relatively high salary at the time.

However, still passionate about interior design, Mr. Thanh decided to take an apprenticeship at an interior design and architecture company, earning only 1.5 million VND per month. While working there, Mr. Thanh realized the vast applications of the Construction Materials industry and the opportunity for breakthrough. Recalling
that time 14 years ago when he faced the crossroads of choosing a major and a career, Mr. Nguyen Van Thanh, Director of Nha Viet Design Architecture and Interior Design Joint Stock Company, has no regrets about his career choice. Joining the Construction Materials program at the University of Construction was the result of careful consideration of the needs of a relatively new field at that time.

After accumulating experience and having a solid foundation of knowledge in the construction materials industry, Mr. Nguyen Van Thanh decided to strike out on his own. He designed, selected materials, and executed the construction himself.

“I worked tirelessly day and night. I designed everything myself, supplied the materials, and completed the construction for my clients. From the smallest details to carrying bricks and molding materials, I did it all myself,” Mr. Nguyen Van Thanh shared.

As orders increased, in 2015, Mr. Thanh decided to establish Nha Viet Design Architecture and Interior Design Joint Stock Company, which now employs 150 people, with him playing the main role in selecting materials for each project.

While not claiming to be a success, Mr. Thanh acknowledges that many graduates of the Construction Materials Engineering program at the University of Construction have successfully started their own businesses.

“When I return to the university and the department, I often jokingly tell the professors that it seems like our department is a training ground for company directors. Many company directors graduated from the Department of Construction Materials. The department provides very comprehensive knowledge. Students grasp things very quickly after graduation, so it's not surprising that many of my colleagues, after a few years since graduation, are now directors of companies,” shared Mr. Nguyen Van Thanh.

Also a graduate of the Construction Materials major at the University of Construction, Mr. Dinh Tien Dat is currently the Deputy Director of a company. For him, everyone has a different passion and career choice, but the field of materials engineering has its own unique and attractive characteristics.

“The materials industry has many new things, and the important thing is that there's something to research and learn about. Especially in recent years, green materials and recycled materials in Vietnam have gradually developed. Of course, there's still a gap compared to the world, but this shows that the potential of this profession is very great,” Mr. Dat said.
As someone passionate about surface and building materials research, Mr. Dinh Tien Dat, a former student of the Building Materials Department (Hanoi University of Civil Engineering), can spend hours introducing various types of materials. For him, everyone has different passions and career choices, but the field of Materials Engineering has its own unique and attractive characteristics.

With nearly a decade of experience working on construction sites and at interior design companies, Mr. Dinh Tien Dat understands the human resource needs of the Building Materials industry. With the rapid development of the construction industry and the increasing demand for interior design in homes, Mr. Dat believes career opportunities are very broad.

“In recent years, building materials companies in Vietnam have developed significantly. Meanwhile, there is a shortage of engineers specializing in building materials; some graduates from other construction-related fields still switch to the materials field. However, if you study the right building materials specialization, you will have more in-depth expertise and more opportunities for advancement.” - Mr. Dinh Tien Dat shared.

Regarding Ha Linh, after graduating from the University of Construction with a major in Construction Materials, she worked in a different field for a while in a government agency. However, her passion for the profession led her back to her chosen career.

“My mother works in construction economics, so from a young age I was familiar with and impressed by A0 drawings. When I was in 12th grade, all I thought about was construction. After graduating, I felt a little lost. But later, when I started working and rediscovered my interests and passions, it was really interesting,” Ha Linh shared.
Mr. Hoang Vinh Long, Head of the Department of Construction Materials (University of Construction): "Candidates should invest time in researching and listening to themselves to see which profession they are passionate about and suited to."

Mr. Hoang Vinh Long, Head of the Department of Construction Materials (University of Construction), said that in recent years, the fields of Materials Engineering have received increasing attention from students. He also stated that the Faculty of Building Materials (Hanoi University of Civil Engineering) has been opening new training programs linked to the development of new materials, focusing on materials requiring a higher level of science and technology.

“Each profession has its own unique appeal. Candidates should invest time in researching and listening to themselves to see which profession they are passionate about and suited to. The field of Materials Engineering, in particular, requires a high level of creativity and the application of many new and modern techniques and technologies. At the same time, the potential for entrepreneurship in the field of building materials is very good,” Mr. Hoang Vinh Long shared.

What do you know about Materials Engineering?

- This is a field that researches and develops methods for manufacturing and processing materials with the aim of obtaining new materials that are more durable, lighter, have superior properties, are more attractive and convenient than before, meeting the ever-increasing needs of people.

-The Materials Engineering major equips students with fundamental knowledge and scientific basis to understand the general foundations of major material groups such as: Metals, Silicate materials, Polymer materials, Energy materials, and advanced materials such as Semiconductors, Superconductors, and Biomedical materials. From this, they can grasp the relationship between the structure and properties of materials.

-This major trains students to be competent in: Selecting, using rationally, and controlling the quality of construction materials to increase the efficiency of construction projects; designing, managing, and operating production lines for construction materials such as concrete, cement, glass, and ceramics; and researching and developing new materials, production technologies, and construction methods.

-Currently, many universities offer Materials Engineering programs, including the University of Construction, which follows the CDIO approach.
