Institute of Construction Materials - 50 years of development
The Vietnam Institute for Building Materials (VIBM), under the Ministry of Construction, is the national scientific and technological research institute focusing on building materials and other fields including construction mechanics, infrastructure, and the construction environment; serving the state management and development of the building materials industry nationwide.
Over more than 50 years of construction and development, the Institute of Building Materials has been awarded many prestigious honors by the Party and the State, including: 2 Third-Class Labor Orders (1977 and 1995), 2 Second-Class Labor Orders (1982 and 1985), 1 First-Class Labor Order (1999), 1 Third-Class Independence Order (2004), 1 Second-Class Independence Order (2009), 1 First-Class Independence Order (2014), and a Certificate of Merit from the Prime Minister (2019). Simultaneously, many research groups from the Institute have received numerous science and technology awards, including: 8 Vifotech Science and Technology Innovation Awards, 3 Utility Model Patents, and 3 Copyright Certificates. The Institute of Building Materials has established cooperative relationships with over 150 foreign partners in the following areas: scientific research; exchange of scientific and technological information; development of technical standards and regulations; training and professional capacity building; technology transfer, equipment, and production lines; and production and trading of building materials products.
Currently, the Institute of Building Materials' facilities include: In the North, the Institute's headquarters are located in Hanoi with a system of laboratories and experimental workshops built on an area of 1.3 hectares: the VILAS 003 national standard laboratory; the LAS XD 1133 specialized construction laboratory; specialized research laboratories: cement and concrete, ceramics and glass, refractory and fire-resistant materials, organic materials and construction chemicals, environment and energy saving...; and specialized experimental workshops for trial production and technology refinement. Facility 2 in Ha Nam, with a land area of over 2.8 hectares, is currently under construction to build an experimental production workshop system. In the South, the Southern Branch of the Institute of Building Materials is located in the Ho Chi Minh City High-Tech Park with facilities including: a national standard laboratory (VILAS 500); and a specialized construction laboratory (LAS XD 165). Fixed assets include machinery, equipment, and tools used for scientific research and scientific and technological services, testing, and inspection.
With a well-developed infrastructure, extensive international cooperation, and a highly qualified research staff in the field of building materials—including over 30 graduates from the Faculty of Building Materials, Hanoi University of Civil Engineering, who hold important positions in the Institute such as Director, Director of the Concrete-Cement Center, etc.—the Institute of Building Materials consistently and effectively carries out the following main tasks:
- Conducting scientific research projects, applying technical advancements, developing and transferring technology in the field of building materials and other fields including: construction mechanics, technical infrastructure, and the built environment.
